I am not, by nature, a competitive person. Losing makes me sad but I get over it quickly. Board games, however, have a tendency to bring out my competitive edge. I think it’s because I always want to beat myself. Can I be more strategic than last time? Is there some way I can thwart the people I’m playing against? Do I have what it takes to outwit and outsmart my opponents? That’s what make board games fun for me.
Board games are also a great way to spend time with others. They provide a social focus which creates an atmosphere where laughter, banter, and playful tension can flourish. (It’s also really fun to yell at people when they do something that hurts your game play.) These games remind me that, while I may not be naturally competitive, the challenge of a good game brings out a drive in me that’s both exhilarating and deeply fulfilling.
