My Top 3 is a weekly post where I count down three things I love in a random category. This week, we’re looking at my top three childhood summer memories.
As I get older, summer feels shorter and shorter. I know this is just time dilation as we age, but summers used to feel like they lasted forever. I find myself nostalgic for those long days spent playing outside with friends. I don’t ever remember thinking it was too hot or scratching bug bites. Summers were pure joy. The joy of no schoolwork. The joy of no scheduled activities. The joy of simply being a kid.
In reality, I know there were rainy days, mosquitos, and boredom. But that’s what nostalgia does. It makes you forget the bad. All you remember is the happiness. I see it now in my kiddo. She has the joy of many hours in the pool, climbing to the top of the net on the playground, and attending her friends’ birthday parties. In her smiles, I remember all the fun I used to have during those longs summer months.
