My Top 3 is a weekly post where I count down three things I love in a random category. This week, we’re looking at my top three things I would happily give up.
People tend to tie up choices with emotions. We want to be able to select items we love or do things we want without interference. Once we acquire stuff or activities we enjoy, we can react quite negatively when those options are taken away. This is loss aversion. We react far more negatively to losing something than gaining something. Heck, I get grumpy when product packaging changes. What was wrong with the old one I knew?
We simply don’t like to lose things one we have them. But, I’ve realized that access and routine does not necessarily equate to happiness and satisfaction. There are things you could never make me give up - looking at you coffee and reading dead tree books. But other things - whatever. I’d pivot to an alternative that would probably serve me just as well.
