My Top 3 is a weekly post where I count down three things I love in a random category. This week, we’re looking at my top three Weird Al parodies.
Weird Al is one of those people I don’t think about at all and then, BAM, I remember something and his work is in my brain for a few days. Growing up, Weird Al often provided the soundtrack of my friend group. We’d randomly burst out singing some of his lyrics or we would request a parody at a school dance. His kind of comedy just works for nerdy middle and high schoolers.
What’s more, Weird Al seems to understand the cultural zeitgeist better than anyone. He knows not only what is going to be popular but the best way to use those songs in his work. Furthermore, he’s a damn good performer. I read a (somewhat) recent profile that shows he is fully on from the start of his shows to the end. There is an energy and zest for what he does that comes out in all his work. That passion is hard to ignore.
Also, I apologize if any ear worms end up in your head after reading this.
