The Best Thing is our weekly discussion thread where we share the one thing that we read, listened to, watched, did, or otherwise enjoyed recently.
Do you ever pick up a book and vibe with it so well that you just want to drop everything and read? That’s me with the book I’m reading right now (Fourth Wing). I just love that feeling.
A book. Dolly Alderton's Dear Dolly: Collected Wisdom. It's selections from her Agony Aunt column days and I'd love for more people to know about it. It's so KIND. The sort of book that makes one pause and say "Well, huh" out loud, often.
I almost always feel that way about Joyce Carol Oates novels, especially if there's a crime element (and there usually is). I have almost 50 unread books by her, because she's so insanely prolific and her books always go on Kindle sale for $1.99. I cannot resist.
Best thing... I came back to my room to find my tortie cat Cecilia manipulating my cell phone with her toe beans. She had opened Spotify. It's crazy because she's a real music-lover. I am not kidding myself that it was anything but a coincidence, but I like to pretend that she knew what she was doing. Especially because the song she pulled up was "Magpie to the Morning" by Neko Case -- a song about birds?! Come on. Amazing.
If cats had opposable thumbs, they would rule the world. Then again, they might do that already because we are always at their beck and call. Cute little monsters.
I'll see your 55% and raise you a tenner. Mittons has developed a new habit of singing us the song of her people (at full lung capacity) juuuust when we're all trying to tuck in at night. She is moving her mouse toys around and complaining about her life, such hardship. Helas.
How old is Mittons? I remember when Genevieve used to sing the song of her people with her favorite toy mouse in her mouth. And then I would find the mouse in my shoe in the morning. But she hasn't done that in a long time.
Not a book but best this week: perpetual absentee ballot registration. Just got ballot for the June 18 primary. Never have to schedule a “poll vault” again. No stamp. No gas. No time.
Extra nice best thing: going down to the end of our street last night, which stops at Lake Erie, and watching the Aurora Borealis together with half of the neighborhood. It was just so chummy. Agog at the sight of it and wow, we really have a lot of nice neighbors. 😊

Oh good, I just got that book last week -- I will read it next!
I hope that you like it too. Lemme know what you thought.
I love a book that makes you say that.
With all of the constant demands for our attention everywhere, it's such a nice wee gift to find a good book to fall into! Yes?

So true. I wish I could see a pie chart of how much time I spend thinking about various things -- I suspect CATS would be at least 55%.

That is tortitude! 🐱

DC mailed ballots to all registrants. It's great!

DC was socked in with clouds and I was so disappointed. We may have a chance tonight but the odds are still low.
